Val d Isere Summary

The ski resort of Val d’Isere is world renowned for its attractive town, lively après ski and, of course, access to the superb high altitude ski area of L’Espace Killy. This high Alpine resort shares its huge skiing area with nearby Tignes and both resorts have an excellent snow record throughout the season.

The town itself stretches out along the valley from La Daille to Le Fornet, with a very efficient shuttle bus service operating throughout the day to whisk you to the nearest lifts. With a great atmosphere both day and night, the town has a pedestrianised area and a good choice of shops, bars and top notch restaurants as well as a swimming pool, ice rink and sports centre. Apres ski truly buzzes here, with everything from happy hours to live music and dancing until the early hours. The infamous Dick’s Tea Bar is the main disco but there are various other nightclubs to choose from.

Most slopes are above the treeline although there are some wooded runs just above the village. The Bellevard mountain, home to the famous ‘Face’ and the OK World Cup Downhill course, is reached most quickly from the La Daille funicular or the Olympique gondola from the main lift area in town. The Solaise is also directly accessible from the main village and has some sunny, gentle runs that will be enjoyed by less confident skiers. There is a third sector consisting mainly of blue and green runs in the valley running up to the Col de l’Isleran which can be reached by piste and lift. Beginners have an excellent nursery slope with free lifts in the centre of town but need to choose their follow-on pistes with care – the Madeleine green run on Solaise is good and you can get a lift back down to the resort. It goes without saying that experienced skiers and boarders have endless opportunities across the whole area.
