Massif des Aravis Summary

Only an hour's drive from Geneva and just 30km from the beautiful town of Annecy, the Aravis mountain resorts consist of La Clusaz, Le Grand-Bornand, St Jean de Sixt and Manigod, offering a wide range of activities throughout the winter. With an Aravis lift pass, skiers have access to more than 220km of runs which are open from mid-December to the end of April. These traditional French mountain villages have plenty of scenic charm and La Clusaz and Le Grand-Bornand have been designated by the French Tourist Board as ‘Family Plus’ resorts, indicating their suitability for family holidays.

The main ski areas in the Aravis range are found at La Clusaz and Le Grand Bornand, with largely intermediate slopes ranging from 1000m to 2600m, both above and below the treeline. The region’s altitude is fairly low but increased snow making capacity has helped to ensure better conditions on the piste. Free buses provide a shuttle service between the resorts for skiers holding the Aravis pass.

There are freestyle snow parks at La Clusaz and Le Grand-Bornand with features including half pipes, boarder cross, rails and a beginners’ plateau; the GB snow park is ranked among France’s top five. St Jean de Sixt is ideal for beginners with just a couple of lifts and several easy slopes whilst Manigod, linked with La Clusaz, has its own small ski area with a variety of runs.

Away from the main pistes, you can try husky and horse sleigh riding, paragliding and speed-riding (skiing with a parachute!). Single edged ‘Paret’ sledging, which originated in Manigod, is a popular activity and there are ice rinks at La Clusaz and Le Grand-Bornand. Cross country skiers can explore the magnificent plateaux and valleys by following over 150km of Nordic trails which are set up for both classic and skating techniques.
