The Slopes

Beginners ****

The village nursery slopes are wide and convenient, and improvers can try the easy runs at Nyon and Super-Morzine on the other side of town. The more confident can head to Les Gets from Le Pleney and return via Le Ranfoilly.

Intermediate *****

The slopes on Le Pleney are ideal for mixed ability parties, but intermediate skiers really have the whole area at their feet from Les Gets to the far corners of the Portes du Soleil.

Advanced ****

The most challenging runs in the resort are down from the Pointe de Nyon and Chamossiere. Mont Chery has some challenging black runs or head to Avoriaz on a Portes du Soleil pass.

Snowboarding ***

Morzine has no terrain parks but does have slopes suitable for boarding, with very few draglifts and flat areas. Nearby Avoriaz which has renowned facilities for boarders is just a short bus ride away.

Morzine Summary

Morzine is a bustling, year round resort with an excellent large ski area, shared with the neighbouring village of Les Gets, and links to the vast Portes du Soleil circuit . Easily accessible by road, this well-established mountain town stretches along both sides of the river and has predominantly attractive chalet-style builidings and a good atmosphere. Different parts of the town can be easily reached via bus, and there is an efficient service to the outlying ski lifts including to Les Gets and Les Prodains for Avoriaz. A tourist train (free with your lift pass) runs across town between the central Pleney lift and the Super-Morzine gondola which heads towards Avoriaz.

Le Pleney is the main ski area accessed from a gondola on the edge of the town centre. This is where the ski schools meet, with a cluster of restaurants at the top and lots of runs heading down the valley. From here you can head over the ridge to Les Gets or to the Nyon sector which has a couple of challenging black runs off the Chamossiere and Pointe de Nyon. There are plenty of blue and red runs throughout the area, including the Rosta and Ranfoilly sectors above Les Gets. On the other side of Les Gets village is Mont Chery (1850) where you will find a choice of quiet reds and some decent blacks runs.

Morzine has convenient nursery slopes at village level, with some pleasant blue runs through wooded areas from Le Pleney, as well as a number of easy pistes for progression in the Nyon sector. Les Gets has wide, easy pistes around Les Chavannes bubble and chairlift. Novices can also try the Super-Morzine slopes on the other side of town.

Although Morzine doesn’t have anything to offer in the way of terrain parks, the slopes here are good for boarders, with some interesting tree-lined pistes and few draglifts or flat areas. Nearby Avoriaz is renowned for its snow parks and there is also a boardercross in Les Gets and a good park near the top of Mont Chery.

Away from the slopes, Morzine has an ice rink, a couple of cinemas and even a cheese factory! The main street up to the lifts to Le Pleney is lined with bars and restaurants and there is a good selection of shops to browse around or you can take a leisurely horse-drawn sleigh ride around town. There is a bus service to Thonon, on the shores of Lake Geneva, whilst picturesque Annecy and the Swiss towns of Montreux and Geneva are accessible by car if you wish to explore further afield. Nightlife is relatively low key in this predominantly family resort but you will find plenty of lively après ski going on at the end of the day.
